Comeback Falls Short for Women’s Soccer against Knights

LYNCHBURG, Va.- It was a game as wild as the weather was at times on Wednesday night. The Randolph women's soccer team hosted Southern Virginia at WildCat Stadium. The 'Cats came back to tie after being down 3-1 but visiting SVU scored late in the second half to come away with a 4-3 victory.

It didn't look good for Randolph early on as SVU went up 1-0 in the 8th minute. The WildCats held their own to keep the Knights from adding to their lead. The defense limited Southern Virginia to two shots for the remaining 37:42 as the score stood at 1-0 at halftime.

The WildCats got on the board as Sara Bane (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) scored unassisted just over a minute into the second half. SVU regained the lead in the 52nd minute and then upped its advantage to two scores with a goal in the 61st minute.

Down but certainly not out, Randolph started to make its way back into the contest. The 'Cats got an own goal by the Knights to get to 3-2 in the 66th minute. Bane then scored again with an assist by Marisa Santacroce (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) in the 74th minute to tie at 3-all.

The teams seemed headed to overtime but Southern Virginia made sure it wouldn't happened. Kassandra Gorton netted the game winner with 1:17 left in regulation.

Southern Virginia outshot Randolph 15-8 and 9-6 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were 6-3 in Randolph's favor.

Alexis Bossi (Falls Church, Va./Justice) had five saves in the net for the 'Cats. Abby Bloxham and Alyssa Trueman split time in goal for the Knights and both came away with a pair of saves.

The WildCats start ODAC play on Sunday as they host Eastern Mennonite. Game time will be at 6:00 p.m.
