WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Randolph men's soccer team traveled to Carolina University on Saturday for an evening tilt with the host Bruins. The WildCats scored late in the second half to break a 1-1 tie as they went on to win 2-1.
Randolph remains unbeaten at 5-0. It is the Wildcats' best start through five games since 2013.
The Bruins got on the board in the 21st minute to take a 1-0 lead. Randolph answered in the 32nd minute. Having just entered into the game, Ashton Poythress (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) quickly made an impact as he assisted Evan Blow (Charlottesville, Charlottesville) on his goal to even the match at 1-1.
The second half was nearly as physical and chippy as the first as a total of 12 fouls were assessed and three yellow cards handed out. Blow was able to come through for the 'Cats he scored in the 78th minute. It was his eighth career game-winning score.
Randolph outshot Carolina 18-11 but only 5-4 in shots on goal. The WildCats had an edge in corner kicks 6-5.
Zach Aylor (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) stopped three shots in the net for the WildCats.
There were 31 fouls called during the contest. Five yellow cards were issued on the night. Randolph got two while the Bruins received three.
The WildCats are back in action on Wednesday night as they host Southern Virginia. Game is set for 7:30 p.m. following the completion of the women's game.
