LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's soccer team hosted Averett in a non-conference match on Wednesday night at WildCat Stadium. The WildCats took an early 1-0 lead but the Cougars scored three times in the second half on their way to a 3-1 win over the 'Cats.
Randolph had control on the offensive end in the early portion of the first half as it had four consecutive corner kicks but could not capitalize on the opportunities. The WildCats took the lead in the 16th minute. Sterlyn Woodard (Blanco, Va./Madison County) passed to Sara Bane (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) from the right side to the middle. Bane made a touch and then finished with a second touch to get the ball in for the score.
Averett had a pair of shots on frame but goalkeeper Alexis Bossi (Falls Church, Va./Justice) was there to pick up the saves. The WildCats continued to attack with four shots on goal but all were turned away.
In the second half, it was Averett's turn to go on the offensive. Adriana Perez scored off an assist from Celia de Diego to tie the game at 1-1. De Diego later scored a solo goal in the 59th minute to put the Cougars ahead for good 2-1. Averett scored once more in the 79th minute.
It was a tale of two halves. Randolph led Averett in total shots 7-3 in the first half but the Cougars led 5-4 in the second half. Overall, the WildCats had an 11-8 advantage in shots and 8-5 in shots on goal.
Bossi finished with two saves on the night. Cougar keepers Morgann Dills and Alyson Kinkoph combined for seven saves.
The WildCats go on the road to face Meredith on Friday. Game time will be at 6:00 p.m.
