BRIDGEWATER, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team faced Guilford and Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon in an ODAC Tri-Match on the Eagles' campus. The WildCats defeated the Quakers 3-1 in the first match and fell to BC 3-0 in the second match. Randolph ends a four-match winless streak to the Quakers and earns its fIrst victory over Guilford since October 29, 2015.
In the first set, GC led 7-2 but Randolph was able to chip away at its deficit as it closed to 10-9. The WildCats still trailed by a point at 15-14 but the Quakers pulled further ahead with an 10-2 run to take the set 25-16.
The 'Cats started off strong in the beginning of the second set as they recorded four of the set's five points. The Randolph advantage soon grew to 10-3 but Guilford started to chip away as it was able to close to within two points at 14-12. GC eventually tied the set at 17-17 but back to back bad sets by the Quakers gave two points to the WildCats. Kills by
Logan Warren (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School) and
Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) upped the Randolph lead to 21-19. The Quakers could get any closer then three points as
Kylee Bennett's (Fayetteville, Va./Whitewater) kill gave the WildCats the set win.
In the third set, Randolph got out ahead 5-1 but Guilford closed in and took its first lead at 14-13. The Quaker lead was as much as 17-14 but the WildCats used a 4-0 run to reclaim its advantage and go ahead 18-17. The lead changed hands three times with the 'Cats taking the final lead at 22-20. Guilford closed to 22-21 but Randolph received a pair of kills by
Audrey Antesberger (Scottsville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) and a Quaker attack error to claim the set 25-21.
The WildCats went ahead 3-1 in the fourth set before Guilford wrestled the lead away and went up 5-3. Randolph came back to overtake the Quakers and led 14-10. Six straight points by GC put them on top 16-14. Three points for Randolph and three points for Guilford had the Quakers ahead 19-17. Two points for both teams ended with Guilford winning 23-21. The 'Cats did string togehter four points ending with a kill by McGinnis to take the set 25-23 and win the match.
Antesberger had a career-best 13 kills to lead the WildCats. She also had four assisted blocks and one solo block.
Lindsey Taylor (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) led in digs with 27 and notched two service aces.
Kenleigh Gunter (Troutville, Va./Lord Botetourt) added 15 digs.
Melody Washington (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) chipped in 12 digs to go with a team-high 23 assists. McGinnis finished with 10 digs and seven kills.
Emily Barcenas (Lawrenceville, Ga./Lanier HS) contributed 12 assists and seven digs. Warren picked up four assisted blocks, one solo block, and three service aces.
Nikki Hurt (Cartersville, Va./Cumberland) put down eight kills and four digs.
Against the Eagles, the WildCats struggled in the early going as BC went up 4-0 and eventually 12-3. The Bridgewater lead grew to 21-4 but the WildCats put together a small rally with an 8-2 run to make the score 23-12. The Eagles, however, got the last two points they needed to win the set 25-12.
The WildCats' late momentum in the first set carried over into the second as they led early on 6-3. Bridgewater did tie and then wrestle the lead back but the 'Cats would stay one step ahead. The set was still up for grabs late as the two teams either tied or stayed within two points of each other. Trailing 23-22, back-to-back kills by McGinnis gave Randolph a 24-23 lead. The Eagles picked up two points to take a 25-23 lead but the team traded off points to leave the set deadlocked at 26-26. Bridgewater got the last two points in the end to win 28-26.
The third set saw the two teams stay fairly close to each other with neither getting out to a big lead. The WildCats were within two points of the Eagles at 10-8. BC then used a 15-5 run to break away and claim the set and match.
Antesberger led the team again in kills with 10. She added four assisted blocks. Hunter led in digs with 11. Washington had 13 assists and nine digs. Barcenas added 10 assists and six digs. McGinnis hit .400 for the match and laid down seven kills.
Randolph closes out the season on Wednesday as they travel to Ferrum. Match time is at 7:00 p.m.
