FERRUM, Va.- It was the final game of the 2021 spring season for the Randolph volleyball team as they faced Ferrum on Wednesday evening. The WildCats dropped the first set but recovered to win the next three as they would go on to claim the match 3-1.
The first set saw the host Panthers get out to a 12-7 lead. Trailing 15-9, the 'Cats had a huge 9-2 run to go ahead 19-17. After a Ferrum timeout, the home team seemed to get its bearings going as they rattled off five straight points to lead 22-19. Back-to-back kills by Tomi-Lauren McGinnins (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) got the WildCats to 22-21. After the Panthers picked up a pair of points, Randolph closed to 24-23 but FC got the last two points to win 26-24.
In the second set, Ferrum once again took an early lead at 6-3. The WildCats soon built up an 11-3 run to go ahead 15-9. An 11-5 Panther run would tie the set at 20-20. Kills by
Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) and
Logan Warren (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School) along with an attack error on the Panthers gave Randolph a 23-20 lead. Ferrum would tie it up at 23-23 but a kill by McGinnis and a service ace by Warren gave the WildCats the set win.
The two teams traded off points in the early goings of the third set but the 'Cats broke away with a 9-1 run to lead 13-5. The WildCat lead continued to grow to as much as 23-10. Ferrum cut into the WildCats advantage but the 'Cats were too much as they won 25-13.
With the fourth set tied at 5-5, Randolph pulled ahead with a 12-6 run to go up 17-11. The Panthers closed to within two points at 23-21 but the WildCats got the last two points, with the final point coming from senior Ambrose, to win 25-21 and take the match.
Ambrose had a double-double performance as she led the WildCats with a season-best 21 kills to go with 10 digs. McGinnis added 11 kills.
Melody Washington (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) led the team with 33 assists and 14 digs.
Lindsey Taylor (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) chipped in 12 digs. Warren laid down seven kills, five service aces, and two assited blocks.
Audrey Antesberger (Scottsville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) contributed eight kills and
Madison Daniels (Warrenton, Va./Liberty) seven digs.
