LEXINGTON, Va. – In the penultimate game of the season, two of the top teams in the ODAC squared off on Sunday as the Randolph men's soccer team faced Washington and Lee. A Generals penalty kick goal in the second half was all the scoring that was needed as W&L defeated the WildCats 1-0.
The loss drops Randolph's record to 4-2-1. Washington and Lee remains undefeated at 5-0-1.
The Generals attacked the WildCat defense early in the first half with a pair of shots on goal that were deflected by Randolph keeper Zach Aylor (Vinton, Va./William Byrd). The defense for the 'Cats also blocked two W&L shot attempts.
Randolph had corner kicks in the 15th and 17th minutes but came up empty. The WildCats had seven corner kicks in all of the first half but could not register a shot on goal.
The Generals' penalty kick came in the 48th minute. A foul on Kyle May (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) at 47:58 inside of the penalty area gave W&L it's scoring chance. Michael Kutsanira's shot went to the left of Aylor and in for the goal.
The W&L defense stiffened in the second as it held the WildCats to just one shot. Randolph also did not have a corner kick in the second half of play.
Aylor finished with four saves on the day to give him 11 on the week. His counterpart for the Generals, Micahel Nyc, had one save.
Washington and Lee led 15-4 in total shots and 5-1 in shots on frame. Corner kicks were in W&L's favor 10-7. There were 29 fouls called but just one yellow card issued in an otherwise clean game.
Randolph hosts its final regular season game of the season this Friday as it welcomes Virginia Wesleyan to WildCat Stadium. Start time will be at 6:00 p.m.
