LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's soccer team hosted its penultimate home game on Wednesday evening as it welcomed Guilford to WildCat Stadium. The WildCats rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie but conceded a goal late in the second half and fell 3-2.
The loss drops Randolph's overall record to 6-10 and 3-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Quakers move to 10-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the conference.
The WildCats got behind 1-0 early in the game in the 7th minute. It was 2-0 GC in the 12th minute before Randolph registered its first shot of the night.
From the 13th minute on, the WildCat offense started to move its way up the field with several shots on goal. Patience finally paid off as Sara Bane (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) assisted Sterlyn Woodward (Banco, Va./Madison County) on her goal in the 29th minute to make it a 2-1 contest where the score stood at halftime.
In the second half, the 'Cats looked for the equalizer. Brook Ford (Buchanan, Va./James River) through the ball in toward the center of the field and Marisa Santacroce (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) took the offering and blasted a shot into the top right corner of the goal and in to tie the game at 2-2.
With new life, Randolph looked to grab the lead from the Quakers. Bane had a pair of close shots turned away by Guilford keeper Ady Franken with Julia Crider (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) getting her shot on frame stopped by Franken.
Guilford took a corner from the left side at 76:31. The kick went towards the net and Bane tried to clear but the ball went in the other direction an in for an own goal to give GC a 3-2 lead.
Randolph had one chance to tie with time winding down. On a free kick, Hannah Bane's (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) shot was grabbed by Franken and time expired as the Quakers came away with the victory.
Overall, the WildCats outshot the Quakers 16-10 including 7-2 in the second half. Shots on goal were 13-6 in Randolph's favor. The 'Cats also led in corner kicks 6-4.
Alexis Bossi (Falls Church, Va./Justice) finished with four saves. Franken had 10 saves.
Randolph will wrap up the regular season this Saturday as it will host Ferrum. Game time will be at 2:00 p.m.
