Volleyball Bested by Guilford 3-1 on Senior Day

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team hosted Guilford on Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match. It was a close match as the first three sets were decided by three points or less but the visiting Quakers came out winning by the score of 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17).

GC got out to a 13-4 lead in the first set but Randolph fought its way back. The WildCats used a 9-1 run to trail by one point at 14-13. Despite the Quakers upping their lead to 22-17, the WildCats closed to within two points at 24-22 but the set ended with a Quaker kill as they won 25-22.

The teams traded off points in the early portion of the second set. The WildCats held a 16-15 lead but the Quakers scored five straight points to go up 20-16. Randolph tied the set at 21-21 and then went up 23-22 on a service ace by Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River). Guilford scored the last three points it needed to win the set 25-23.

The Quakers got out ahead 7-0 in the third frame and as much as nine points at 13-4. The WildCats still trailed 21-14 but then used a massive 11-2 run to shut down Guilford and come away with the win in the set 25-23.

Guilford got the first four points of the fourth set but Randolph countered to score four points and tie 4-4. An 11-1 GC run pushed the Quakers up 15-5. Despite Guilford leading 21-13, the 'Cats chipped away with three points to trail 21-16. Randolph was just six points behind at 23-17 but Guilford notched kills from Kaitlyn Kelley and Cydney Scott to win the set 25-17.

Logan Warren (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School) led the WildCats with 13 kills while also tallying three block assists. McGinnis had a double-double effort of 10 kills and 12 digs to go with three service aces. Kenleigh Gunter (Troutville, Va./Lord Botetourt) had a team-high 19 digs. Emily Barcenas (Lawrenceville, Ga./Lanier) led in assists with 22 and laid down two service aces. Melody Washington (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) added 15 assists and nine digs.

Prior to the match, the team recognized senior Barcenas along with student assistant coach Katelyn Young.

Randolph wraps up the regular season next Friday as ot hosts Roanoke. Match time is at 6:30 p.m.
