SALEM, Va.- The Randolph men's soccer team headed on the road to Roanoke on Saturday to go up against a Maroon team that had only conceded eight goals all season. RC scored on a penalty kick in the first half and made it hold up as it went on to win 1-0.
Randolph falls to 11-2-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Roanoke improves to 8-3-5 and 3-1-4 in the conference.
In the first half, Randolph was able to get off just two shots by Tucker Leverone (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River). The Maroons, on the other hand, were called offside five times in the first 27 minutes of play. The game seemed destined to go scoreless into the break until a foul was called on Randolph's Tory Brown (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) in the 43rd minute inside of the box. Granted a penalty kick, Roanoke's Dylan Berk converted on the opportunity to put the home team ahead 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Maroons defense lived up to its billing as they held the WildCats to three total shots on two on frame. Noah Carney (Charleston, WV/Homeschool) in the 83rd minute and Patrick Peach (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) in the 84th minute were Randolph's only shots on goal.
Zach Aylor (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) had one save for the WildCats in the net. Zach Behe for Roanoke also had one save.
Both teams recorded five total shots and two shots on frame. Corner kicks were in Randolph's favor 4-3. Both schools had six fouls each.
The WildCats wrap up the regular season on Tuesday when they travel to Ferrum. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
