LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's volleyball team hosted N.C. Wesleyan in a non-conference match on Friday night at Giles Gymnasium. The Battling Bishops defeated the WildCats 3-0.
Randolph took an early 4-1 lead in the first set before N.C. Wesleyan rallied to go up 5-4. The 'Cats countered with a 4-0 run to jump ahead 9-5. The Battling Bishops answered that rally with one of their own to go up 10-9. The WildCats wrestled the lead back to go ahead 12-10. N.C. Wesleyan used a 10-3 run to take a 20-15 lead. Randolph chipped away at its deficit but the Battling Bishops ultimately won 25-19.
N.C. Wesleyan took a 4-0 lead in the second set. A big 9-3 run gave the visitors a 15-3 advantage. The Battling Bishops stayed comfortably ahead taking the set 25-15.
The Battling Bishops led 5-0 in the third set. Randolph rallied to tie the frame up three times to get to 7-7. Down 15-13, the WildCats went on a 7-1 run to lead 20-16. N.C. Wesleyan counted with a 6-0 to take the lead and go up 22-20. Randolph rallied again to go up 23-22 and at 24-23 was a point from taking the set. The Battling Bishops, however, garnered the last three points to win the set 26-24 and take the match.
Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) and Logan Warren (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School) both had seven kills each to lead the WildCats. McGinnis added seven digs while Warren tallied three blocks assists and a solo block. Kenleigh Gunter (Troutville, Va./Lord Botetourt) had a team-high 19 digs. Emily Barcenas (Lawrenceville Ga./Lanier) totaled eight assists.
Randolph returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Wednesday as they travel to Randolph-Macon. Game time from Ashland will be at 7:00 p.m.
