Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WildCats Shoot Down Hollins 61-42

LYNCHBURG, Va.- In a rematch of last month's overtime loss, the Randolph women's basketball was hoping their second time with Hollins would not end like the first. The WildCats made sure of it as they handled Hollins 61-42 on Saturday afternoon at the RAD Center.

Four of Randolph's five starters reached double figures led by Yanessa Cabrera's (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) 19 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds, dished out six assists, and came away with a pair of steals.

Kalyn Banks (Clinton, Md./From the Heart Christian School) started the game with her first made three-point field goal of the season to give Randolph the lead. The two teams alternated baskets but Hollins would lead 12-10 at the end of the quarter.

Hollins started to pull away as it went up by four, 19-15, with under six minutes remaining in the second quarter. Randolph had an answer as it went on a 10-0 run to end the quarter and went into the locker room with momentum and a 25-19 lead.

The WildCats led by nine, 33-24, at 6:26 of the third quarter. Hollins cut to within five but a 10-2 spurt by the 'Cat upped their lead to 14 points, 44-30, at the end of the period. Randolph maintained its double-digit lead in the fourth quarter as Hollins could get no closer than 11 points.

Randolph increased its shooting percentage each quarter and was 7-of-12 (58.3%) in the final quarter. Overall, the WildCats were 21-of-52 (40.4%). They shot 7-of-19 (36.8%) from beyond the three-point arc. Hollins was 15-of-50 (30%) overall and 4-of-19 (21.1%) from three-point land.

The WildCats controlled the boards with a 47-25 advantage. Randolph outscored Hollins 10-0 on second-chance points and in the paint 28-20.

Banks picked up her sixth double-double performance of the season as she scored 13 points to go along with 15 rebounds. She tallied three assists, two steals, and one block. Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) added 12 points and five rebounds. Alyssa Morroni (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) had a season-best 10 points.

"Really proud of our effort and execution today especially on the defensive end," said head coach Steve Lanpher. "We defended for four quarters and really frustrated them. Offensively, we took care of the basketball and dominated the boards on both ends."

Hollins' Kayla Surles, who came into today averaging a team and ODAC-best 16.8 points a game, was 0-for-7 from the field. She made one free throw to go with four assists and two rebounds.
