LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team hosted its first game of 2020 on Saturday afternoon as they welcomed Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Bridgewater to the RAD. The Eagles pulled away from the WildCats with a 13-5 fourth quarter run to win 59-42.
Randolph falls to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the ODAC. Bridgewater improves to 4-8 overall and 3-2 in the ODAC.
The WildCats scored the first two baskets of the game on back-to-back Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) layups. Following a pair of free throws by Bridgewater, Cabrea gave the 'Cats a 6-2 lead with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. The Eagles would tie and eventually take the lead at 3:19 9-8. BC led 16-10 at the end of the quarter.
The BC lead grew to 11 points, 21-10, early in the second quarter. Trailing 26-14 with 4:36 to play in the period, the WildCats scored six straight points to make it a two-possession game, 26-20, with under two minutes remaining until halftime. The Eagles outscored the 'Cats 5-1 to go up 31-21 at the break.
In the third quarter, the WildCats were still in a double-digit deficit. Trailing 43-31 with 3:47 showing on the clock, Cabrera was fouled on a converted layup and made the subsequent free throw to make it a nine-point game 43-34. Free throws from Amber Garrett (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) got the 'Cats to within seven points. Going into the final quarter of play, Randolph trailed 46-37.
The Eagles started the fourth quarter with five straight points to up their lead to 51-37. The Bridgewater defense held the WildCats to just two field goals in the period and held the 'Cats scoreless for the final four minutes of game time.
The key stat was three-point shooting as Bridgewater was 8-of-27 (29.6%) compared to Randolph's 1-of-20 (5%). Overall the Eagles were 18-of-62 (29%) from the floor and Randolph was 15-of-58 (25.9%).
Cabrera led Randolph with 15 points to go with three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one blocked shot. Lanaysia Gonzalez (Richmond, Va./Goochland) added seven points and four rebounds. Kalyn Banks (Clinton, Md./From the Heart Christian School) pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to go with four points, two assists, and two steals.
The WildCats are home again this Tuesday when they host St. Mary's College of Maryland in non-conference play. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
