LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team was in search of its first win of 2020 on Tuesday night as they hosted St. Mary's (Md.) in a non-conference game at the RAD. The WildCats had a strong performance in nearly all facets as they defeated the Seahawks 65-41.
The win snaps a two-game winless streak for the WildCats as they move to 5-7 overall. The Seahawks fall to 3-9.
Randolph got out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter but St. Mary's responded with a 9-2 run to go ahead 9-6 with 3:45 remaining in the period. That is where the score stood at the end as the teams were a combined 0-for-7 from the field for the rest of quarter.
The second quarter saw the 'Cats go on a 9-3 run and lead 15-12 at 6:22. The Seahawks would then take their own three-point lead, 18-15, with 3:37 remaining in the period. A 13-3 Randolph run, with consecutive three-point baskets from Lindsey Marshall (Stuart, Va./Patrick County), Amber Garrett (Stephens City, Va./Sherando), and Audrey Antesberger (Scottsville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield), lifted the WildCats to a 26-21 lead with 49 ticks left until halftime. St. Mary's cut the lead to one point, 26-25 at the break.
Randolph picked right back in the third quarter with a 7-0 run to go up 33-25. St. Mary's again cut into the WildCat lead but the 'Cats built it back up with an 11-3 run spanning just over half of the period as Randolph went ahead 44-35.
The WIldCats' run extended into the fourth quarter as they took their biggest lead of the night, 55-35, with 7:16 left to play. Randolph would outscore St. Mary's 21-6 as it dominated the Seahawks.
"Our defensive pressure in the third quarter allowed us to get out in transition and get some easy buckets," said head coach Steve Lanpher after the game. "We have been struggling shooting the ball so it was nice to see some shots go down."
Randolph shot 41.4% (24-of-58) from the field as St. Mary's shot 22.8% (13-of-57). After starting the first quarter going 0-for-4 in three-point field goals, the WildCats were 7-of-19 for the rest of the evening.
The WildCats controlled the glass with a 48-35 advantage. Randolph also led in points off turnovers (15-9), second-chance points (9-0), bench points (27-10), and points in the paint (24-14).
Kalyn Banks (Clinton, Md./From the Heart Christian School) led the 'Cats with a season-high 17 points and 14 rebounds. Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) added 10 points. Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) scored six points, dished out nine assists, grabbed six rebounds, and also picked up three steals. Antesberger also had six points and six rebounds. Natalie Clark (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) chipped in six points and three rebounds.
The WildCats travel to Emory and Henry on Saturday to take on the Wasps. Game time will be at 2:00 p.m.
