LYNCHBURG, Va.- Visiting Roanoke used a big fourth quarter effort to pull away from the Randolph women's basketball team as the Maroons won 64-34 on Wednesday evening at the RAD Center. RC improves to 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the conference while the WildCats fall to 5-13 and 1-11 in the ODAC.
Randolph led 5-0 on a three and layup by Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) to start the game off. The lead would disappear as the Maroons used an 8-0 run to lead 8-5 with a little over five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Roanoke would go on to take a 19-9 lead at the completion of the period.
The Maroon lead grew to 12 points early in the second quarter but the WildCats cut to within seven points at 6:51. Roanoke scored six straight points to expand its advantage to 29-16 at the break.
The Roanoke lead fluctuated in the third quarter but the visitors still maintained a double-digit advantage. A three by Amber Garrett (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) closed the 'Cats to 11 points, 40-29, with 40 seconds showing on the game clock before Roanoke pushed its lead out to 15 at the end of the frame. The Maroons outscored the WildCats 20-5 in the final quarter of play.
Overall, Roanoke was 24-of-53 from the floor (45.3%) and Randolph 14-of-62 (22.6%). Neither team shot well from outside the three-point line as the WildCats were 5-of-27 (18.5%) to Roanoke's 1-of-7 (14.3%).
Garrett led the WildCats with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and was 3-of-5 from behind the three-point arc. O'Neil added seven points and eight rebounds. Audrey Antesberger (Scottsville, Va./St. Anne's Belfied) also pulled down eight rebounds to go with three blocked shots. Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) dished out seven assists and grabbed six rebounds.
Randolph travels to Bridgewater this coming Saturday. Game time will be at 2:00 p.m.
