Men’s Soccer Stopped by Averett

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's soccer team hosted Averett on Saturday afternoon in the WildCats' home opener. The Cougars spoiled the 'Cats first game on their new turf with a 3-0 victory.

Averett got a couple of shots off in the opening minutes of the contest that starting goalkeeper Erick Cortez-Martinez (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth) was able to pick up. Cortez-Martinez was not lucky however in the 11th minute as Averett's Patrick Miller sent a shot into the corner of the net and in to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The Cougars scored again just over four and a half minutes later to go up 2-0.

In the second half, the Cougars were granted a penalty kick at 50:58 that they converted to put the score at 3-0. It was not until the 62nd minute that Randolph got it first shot on frame by Allen Vaytser (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis).

Overall, Randolph led in total shots taken with 13 compared to Averett's eight. The Cougars did have six of those attempts on goal compared to four for the WildCats. Randolph had 14 corner kicks to Averett's three.

Cortez-Martinez finished with three saves for the WildCats. His counterpart for Averett, Colton Duchess, stopeed four shots.

Randolph returns to WildCat Stadium on Wednesday as it hosts Regent University. Game time will be at 6:00 p.m.
