LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's soccer team was supposed to kick off its game with Regent at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday night at WildCat Stadium but Mother Nature had other plans. A nearly two-hour lightning delay pushed the start time to just before 8:00 p.m. It was worth the wait for the 'Cats as they defeated the Royals by the score of 11-0 for their first victory of the season.
The 11 goals scored by the WildCats are the most in program history and tops the record of eight set against Southern Virginia in 2013. A total of nine players got into the scoring column for the team.
Noah Carney (Charleston, W.V./Homeschool) and Ashton Poythress (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) both scored their first and second career goals on the evening. Wes Boor (Lovingston, Va./Nelson County) also registered his first career goal in the 48th minute.
Also picking up goals on the night were Evan Blow (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville), Gabe Krueger (Jacksonville, N.C./White Oak), Gunnar Copeland (Carrollton, Va./Smithfield), Niles Brown (Dacula, Ga./Coral Academy), Jamie Dickson (Portsmouth, Va./Woodrow Wilson) and Kyle Wade (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown). It was Krueger's third goal of the season and the second for Blow.
Goalkeeping duties were split among three players. Erick Cortez-Martinez (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth) got the start and had one save in 33:46. Zach Aylor (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) saw 26:20 of game time and did not register a save. Cody Toews (Bumpass, Va./Louisa County) picked up a save in 29:54 of game time.
The WildCats go on the road Saturday to Chestertown, Md. to face Washington College. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
