THE BRONX, NY- The Randolph women's basketball travelled to the New York City area to play Mount Saint Vincent in a non-conference game on Saturday. The Dolphins used a big third quarter run to move past the WildCats and win 69-50.
Randolph led 11-7 in the first quarter before MSV came back to tie the game at 13-13 where the score stood at the end of the quarter. The two teams exchanged baskets in the second quarter. The Dolphins' Ashley Martin scored a layup to tie the game at 25-25 with 1:47 left and then converted two free throw shots to give Mount Saint Vincent a 27-25 lead at halftime.
Alyssa Morroni (Springfield, Va./Springfield) scored less than a minute into the third quarter to knot the score at 27-27. The Dolphins then embarked on a game-changing 12-0 run to jump ahead 39-27 with 5:15 left in the period. A 13-2 Dolphin run gave Mount Saint Vincent its biggest lead of the afternoon, 52-34, with 1:09 remaining in the frame. The Dolphins maintained their lead in the fourth period and were ahead by as much as 20 points, 65-45, with 3:45 left to play in the game.
Elizabeth Ellen (Mechanicville, Va./Hanover) led the WildCats with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and also had a team-high seven rebounds. Natalie Clark (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) was 4-of-7 from the field in 12 minutes off the bench for eight points. Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) had a balanced effort with six points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
"Strong defensive effort in the first half but our shooting woes continued and we struggled offensively in the second half," said head coach Steve Lanpher. "Elizabeth Ellen played a solid overall game subbing for Kalyn Banks. Audrey Antesberger, Maggie Walton and Natalie Gave us some good minutes of the bench."
Randolph got big contributions from its bench as it outscored Mount Saint Vincent 27-7. The Dolphins had the slight edge in rebounds, 49-48.
The WildCat start Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Wednesday as they travel to Salem to play Roanoke. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
