SALEM, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team opened up play in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on Wednesday night as they faced Roanoke. The Maroons used a big first quarter lead on their way to a 64-39 win over the WildCats.
Roanoke was ahead 11-0 before the WildCats recorded their first basket of the game. The Maroons led 23-9 at the completion of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Maroons outscore the WildCats by a closer score of 11-10. RC had a 16-6 advantage in the third period. The fourth quarter was even 14-14. Randolph shot over 38% from the field in the final frame and was 2-of-5 (40%) from behind the three-point arc.
"We are an extremely young team and our inexperience showed vividly in our first ODAC game," said head coach Steve Lanpher. "Roanoke came out and disrupted us and forced us into numerous turnovers that led to easy transition baskets. We battled back in the 2nd quarter but couldn't cut the lead to double digits before half. We will learn from this loss and focus on improving our offensive execution and defensive rebounding."
Lanaysia Gonzalez (Richmond, Va./Goochland) led the 'Cats with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting and also grabbed seven rebounds. Amber Garrett (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) added six points to go with three steals and two rebounds. Alyssa Morroni (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) chipped in six points. Kalyn Banks (Clinton, Md./From the Heart Christian School) finished with two points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Audrey Antesberger (Scottsville, Va./St. Anne's Belfied) scored three points to go along with three steals.
The WildCats return to the hardwood next Tuesday as they face Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C. Game time will be at 6:00 p.m.
