LYNCHBURG, Va.- It was CODE BLACK night on Tuesday as the volleyball team hosted Roanoke in Old Dominion Athletic Conference Action. The Maroons defeated the WildCats 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-9).
Randolph evens its record at 9-9 and drops to 4-5 in the ODAC. Roanoke goes to 9-9 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Randolph got out to a 5-3 lead in the first set. The Maroons came back to go ahead 11-8 but the WildCats rallied to tie at 11-11 and the teams then traded off points. With the set tied at 14-14, Roanoke went on a 9-4 run to go up 23-18. The 'Cats cut the lead to 23-21 but the Maroons tallied the last two points to claim the frame 25-21.
The Wildcats went ahead 7-3 in the second set but Roanoke rallied to tie it at 7-all. A 6-2 Randolph burst restored the 'Cats' four-point lead but it did not last as a 12-2 run staked the visitors to a 21-15 advantage. Randolph was able to clip the deficit to 24-21 but the Maroon would take the set on a Taja Hunley (Sumter, S.C./Thomas Sumter Academy) error.
It was all Roanoke in the third set as with an 8-3 lead, the Maroons ran off 10 straight points to go ahead 18-3 and never look back.
Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) led with 13 kills, Meghan Chaffins (Temperanceville, Va./Holly Grove Christian) and Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) both added four kills each. Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) chipped in 29 assists. Sam Verhaagen (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Christian) laid down 14 digs. Taylor Webb had eight digs while Kennedy Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) had seven.
Randolph travels to Misenheimer, N.C. for a non-conference tilt with Pfeiffer on Friday night. Start time for the match with be at 7:00 p.m.
