Scoring Flurry Sees Yellow Jackets Overtake WildCats 5-2

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph and Randolph-Macon women's soccer teams combined for six goals in the first half of play on a cold and blustery evening at WIldCat Stadium on Wednesday. The Jackets led 4-2 at the break and tacked on another goal late in the second half as they won 5-2.

The loss evens Randolph's record at 5-5-2 and drops it to 1-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Randolph-Macon remains unbeaten at 13-0 and 5-0 in the conference.

The WildCats jumped ahead quickly 38 seconds into the first half on a goal by Sara Bane (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt). RMC wasn't behind for long as at 1:54 ODAC leading scorer Gabby Nelson fired a shot past WildCat goalkeeper Zoe Warning (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and in to knot the contest up.

Waring stopped five more Yellow Jacket shot opportunities but let in Casey Kent's goal in the 14th minute to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage. Less than two minutes later, Bane struck again as Randolph-Macon goalie Christina Newman, who came out to challenge, deflected her kick back to Bane who came down with the ball and sent a high shot  into an empty net before a Yellow Jacket defender could get there to even the contest at 2-2.

The score remained tied until Nelson scored her third goal at 29:16 to give RMC the lead for good at 3-2. Her fourth of the evening came at 37:32 as Randolph went into halftime trailing 4-2.

The WildCat defense stood firm in the second half as they allowed four shots on goal to the Yellow Jackets. Nelson capped her night her fifth score in the 88th minute.

Waring had a career game with 19 saves overall. RMC outshot Randolph 36-4 and 24-3 in shots on goal.

Bane's two goals give her 13 for the season, which is already a career-best.

The WIldCats go on the road Saturday to play Bridgewater. Game time will be at 11:00 a.m.
