Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA.- The Randolph women's soccer team hosted Eastern Mennonite University its final home game of the season on Saturday afternoon at WildCats Stadium. After a scoreless first half, the teams combined for five goals in the second with the Royals coming out ahead 4-1.
The Royals improve to 6-7-2 overall and 4-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Randolph drops to 3-10-2 and 1-7-1 in the ODAC.
It was a defensive first half with EMU leading in shots 5-1. Starting WildCat goalkeeper Quinn-Lynn Bates (Culpepper, Va./Culpepper County), fresh off her 17-save performance on Wednesday night, turned away three Royals' shots in the frame to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
In the second half, Bates came up with her fourth save of the afternoon just 29 seconds in. EMU scored at 46:48 when Bates misplayed the ball and the Royals' Rachel Sauder was there to tuck it in for the 1-0 lead. It was less than three minutes after that when the Royals struck again as Laura Rittenhouse fired a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and behind Bates' back past the line to make it a 2-0 contest.
Randolph nearly had its first goal of the day at 65:05. Hunter Robinson (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River/Slidell) passed to Delaney Doyle (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) from the right side but Doyle's shot attempt went left of the post
Stephanie Quirk (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) came in to relieve Bates at 53:09 and picked up back-to-back saves at 61:58 and 62:39. Quirk rejected another EMU shot at 73:26 but the rebound came back to Leigh Lumsden, who tucked the ball in for a 3-0 Royals advantage.
Eastern Mennonite almost went up 4-0 in the 86th minute but Lumsden's shot hit the post. Randolph was able to get on the scoreboard soon after. Patricia Garrett (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox County) took the corner kick and lofted the ball to Royals' goalie Leah Wenger who knocked it down. Marle King (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) was there to picked up the rebound and shoot into the net to put the score at 3-1. EMU added its fourth goal with 1:40 left to play as Quirk came out of position and Shaylla Oswald scored into the empty net.
Eastern Mennonite led it shots 16-5. The WildCats had the edge in corner kicks 3-1.
Bates finished with three saves with Quick coming up with four. Wenger had one.
Prior to the start of the game, the WildCats recognized their six graduating seniors. Honored alongside Bates, Quirk, Garrett, Doyle, and Robinson was also Missy Hussey (Oceanside, Calif./Quantico (Va.).
Randolph concludes the 2017 season on Wednesday when it travels up Route 29 to play Sweet Briar. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
