WildCats Fall on Senior Day

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's lacrosse team hosted Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Randolph-Macon College on Saturday.  Prior to the Yellow Jackets 23-1 victory, Randolph honored its three seniors: Ashton Ewers, Carrie McCane, and Taylor Riccardi.

Once the game began, the WildCats had the first opportunity as Nicole Dorton pulled in the draw control.  She made a nice pass to Hannah Bradley but hers shot was just off target.  The Yellow Jackets took possession soon after and scored two quick goals, both coming off of quick counters.

The WildCats defense played very strong over the next few minutes, as Ewers caused a turnover and she stopped three shots.  Unfortunately R-MC broke through for four quick goals. Ewers made another save during the series and Dorton added another draw control.

Riccardi forced a turnover on the next possession, cementing herself as one of the best in program history in that statistic.  It started a successful clear, which saw Erin Campbell awarded a free position shot.  She went high and found the back of the net.  However, the Yellow Jackets came back with a quick scoring run that gave the visitors a 13-goal lead.  Ewers made four saves over the final minutes of the half and forced another turnover to keep the score at that mark.

Randolph-Macon came out of the break quickly and added to their lead.  However, the defense played very well for Randolph, as Taylor Gamble, Leah Hughes, Riccardi, Maddie Peters, and the rest of the defenders did a great job of going against the numerous sets of R-MC.  The visitors' offense was frustrated by the effort of the defenders.  Peters and Riccardi both forced turnovers during the run.  However the second half run would allow the Yellow Jackets to leave with the victory.

Ewers scooped up a game-high five ground balls to go with her seven saves and two CTs.  Riccardi also forced two turnovers while picking up two ground balls.  McCane played stellar defense in her final home game.

Alicia Hsieh led the Yellow Jackets (10-4 overall, 7-0 ODAC) with six goals and an assist.  Alex Lightfoot scored once while assisting on five tallies.

Randolph (2-14, 1-7) will head on the road for its final game of the season.  The WildCats will travel to Virginia Wesleyan (2-13, 1-7) on Saturday, with the first draw control set for 4 p.m.
