Randolph Falls at Bridgewater
BRIDGEWATER, VA – The Randolph College women's lacrosse team traveled to Bridgewater College on Wednesday night, and dropped the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest 14-4.
The WildCats earned the first chance of the game, as Nicole Dorton pulled in the opening draw control. Leah Hughes had a nice shot, but it was saved by Brittney Brown. The Eagles countered soon after and Anna O'Hara started a 3-0 run. Taylor Riccardi nearly broke it up after the second, but her attempt was saved.
The defense picked up shortly after as Maddie Peters, Riccardi, and Hughes all caused turnovers, while Ashton Ewers stopped a free position shot. The save started a quick counter, and Riccardi fired it in the back of the net. However, the Eagles responded with a quick 4-0 run to take a 7-1 lead.
Randolph stopped the run soon after, as Addie Moore was fouled on a drive. She was awarded a free position shot, and she fired it in the back of the net for her first goal of the year. Marciniak forced a turnover and Ewers thwarted two more attempts to send the visitors into the half down five.
Bridgewater came out of the intermission aggressively, but Ewers stopped the first shot she faced. However, BC retained possession and started the period with an early goal. The 'Cats defense held Bridgewater at bay for over eight minutes, as Ewers made another save and Dana Cavallo caused a turnover. But the Eagles went on a quick burst, scoring six unanswered to take a 14-2 lead.
Following the last tally, Dorton won another draw control, and she raced down the field and fired the ball home to cut into the lead. Bridgewater went back on the attack, but once again Ewers was there to keep the home side out of the net. Marciniak then found Hannah Bradley near the cage, and Bradley scored to bring Randolph within 10. However, the hosts would hold on for the victory.
Dorton pulled in six draw controls, while Riccardi corralled three. Riccardi also scooped up three ground balls to go with her goal in the game. Jenna Devilbiss led BC (8-7 overall, 3-4 ODAC) with five goals.
Randolph (2-13, 1-6) will return home for the final time of the season. The WildCats host Randolph-Macon College (9-4, 6-0) at 4 p.m. Prior to the game, the 'Cats will honor their three seniors: Riccardi, Ewers, and Carrie McCane.
