Hat Trick by Gleitz Not Enough

LYNCHBURG, VA – Andrew Gleitz scored three goals for the Randolph College men's lacrosse team on Tuesday night, but the WildCats fell to Lynchburg College 14-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup.

The Hornets were the first to get on the board, as Austin Stewart scored at the 13:54 mark.  It would be several minutes before the next one, as Cam Davis was immense in net.  Davis stopped a shot before getting the ball back to the 'Cats, but the offense could not connect on goal.  When LC came back down, Davis was there again, stopping two more attempts.  However, Lynchburg broke through at the 8:44 mark to take a two-goal lead.

Shortly after the next faceoff, Davis made another save, before the teams exchanged possession several times.  Davis and his counterpart, Chris Hawley, made big saves, keeping the score at 2-0.  Then, right after the four minute mark, Mitch MacDonald found Gleitz right on crease, and Gleitz finished to halve the deficit.  However, the Hornets tallied one more time before the end of the period, bringing the lead to 3-1.

Davis started out on fire in the second, as he stopped two early shots.  But LC managed to go on a quick run, scoring three times in less than a minute, with all of the goals coming in fast break situations.  Davis responded well, stopping two more shots before Ryan Kardux made the lead 7-1 with 5:35 remaining.  The rest of the half remained scoreless with both defenses making several plays.

Matt Lindenbaum came in for Davis to start the second half, and he made another early save.  However, Stewart tallied again at 11:28 to expand the advantage.  But on the following possession, Stewart turned the ball over after being stick-checked by Baden James.  The WildCats came down, and Corey Nehlig drove on the right side.  He found Gleitz on the doorstep once again, and Gleitz finished for his second.  However, Lynchburg answered again with a quick three-goal burst.

After being down 11-2, Gleitz completed his hat trick in the game.  Andrew Risse found him in his favorite spot, and Gleitz brought the 'Cats within eight with 3:15 left in the third.  But Danny Czerkawski scored after winning the ensuing faceoff.  In the fourth, the Hornets added two more, before MacDonald fired one in late, with Risse getting the assist.  However, the game would end with the 14-4 score line.

James and Spencer Matthews caused three turnovers apiece during the game.  Davis was also stout defensively, stopping 11 total shots and picking up six ground balls in one half of play.  Stewart had a game-high four goals for the Hornets (7-6 overall, 4-1 ODAC).

Randolph (7-6, 1-4) will head on the road for this weekend's game.  The WildCats take on Bridgewater College (6-6, 1-4) in a pivotal game to determine who makes the ODAC Tournament.  The first faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
