Ewers 12 Saves Not Enough for WildCats
GREENSBORO, NC – Ashton Ewers stopped 12 of the shots she faced on Wednesday night, but it was not enough, as the Randolph College women's lacrosse team fell 18-2 to Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
The Quakers went on the offensive early on as Ewers saved the first attempt, with it being even more impressive as a free position shot. However, GC got the ball back, and found the back of the net for the first time of the night. The 'Cats had the next opportunity, but could not find the back of the net.
Guilford scored on the ensuing break to take a 2-0 lead with 25:09 remaining. The Quakers next shot ended up begin a yellow card, giving Randolph the advantage. The WildCats used the advantage, as Taylor Riccardi brought the 'Cats within one, firing one in the back of the cage. Unfortunately, GC answered in less than a minute on the other end. Randolph received several chances soon after, but the hosts stopped them, and added to their lead soon after, with a large run.
Ewers continued to do a great job in the crease for the WildCats. She stopped six attempts by the hosts, keeping them out of the cage on several occasions. The defenders were also stout for Randolph during this time as Carrie McCane, Riccardi, and Katie Jones all forced turnovers.
Guilford added to its lead coming out of the break, but Ewers kept up her stout work in between the pipes. She made three stops before Hannah Bradley found the back of the net for her first of the game. Ewers made double digits for the fourth straight game over the final minutes, but the hosts earned the victory.
Riccardi finished with five ground balls, four draw controls, and two caused turnovers in the game. McCane also forced two in the game, while scooping up four ground balls during the game.
Marina Bailey led the Quakers (4-5 overall, 2-0 ODAC) with five goals.
Randolph (2-7, 1-1) will stay on the road for its next game. The WildCats travel to Salem, VA to take on Roanoke College (3-5, 1-1) on Saturday. The game begins at 2 p.m.
