Blistering Finish Gives Randolph Win over JWU
CHARLOTTE, NC – The Randolph College women's soccer team traveled to Johnson & Wales University (NC) for its regular season finale on Saturday. The warm-up for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) first round game, proved to be a high octane affair, ending in a 4-3 win for the WildCats.
JWU were the first to get on the board, scoring early in the first half. However, the 'Cats responded just before the final whistle of the half. Megan Kruse found Hannah Overstreet near the goal. Overstreet then tallied her first collegiate goal, tying the score at the half.
The second stanza saw few fireworks early on, but many late. Kruse tallied midway through the period off a pass from Patricia Garrett to take a 2-1 lead, but it would not last the rest of the period.
With seven minutes left in the game, Johnson & Wales tied it after converting a questionable penalty. Randolph grabbed back the lead shortly after, as Erin McClelland scored off of a free kick in the 87th minute. But JWU answered right back a minute later to knot the game at three-all.
However, with the clock winding down, and overtime looming, Alissa Gembach found Sam Hablas in a perfect spot. Hablas sent home her shot, giving Randolph the 4-3 advantage with only 15 seconds remaining. JWU would have no response in the waning seconds, giving the WildCats the win.
Stephanie Quirk earned the win in goal.
Randolph (5-10-1 overall, 4-6 ODAC) will compete in the ODAC tournament for the second-straight year on Monday night. The 'Cats will travel to Eastern Mennonite University (8-9-1, 4-6) for the second time in less than a week, taking place in the 8v9 first round game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
