Second-Half Surge Downs WildCats

SALEM, VA – Following a historic win on Wednesday, the Randolph College women's soccer team traveled to Roanoke College on Saturday for an important Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.  Despite goalkeeper Stephanie Quirk playing big, the WildCats fell 3-1.

Quirk was tested early by the hosts, as she was forced to make a save less than a minute into the game.  The Maroons continued to send shots her way, but most missed the frame completely and she made another stop.  Despite the attack in the beginning by Roanoke, Delaney Doyle had an attempt of her, but it was stopped.  The Maroons then broke through in the 11th minute as Emily Whitaker's shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and went past the line.

Following the restart, Quirk would be called upon once again.  She made three quick saves in successions, before adding two more in the next few minutes to keep the disadvantage at one.

As the half would go on, the WildCats became more dangerous and got several positive looks at goal.  Doyle had a shot blocked and Megan Kruse had an attempt saved.  Then with the half winding down, Roanoke committed a foul in the box.  Patricia Garrett took the ball to the spot, and slotted home the penalty to tie the score before the intermission.

However, after that tie at the break, the remainder of the game would be controlled by the Maroons.  Quirk had to make two quick saves to start the second stanza.  Then in the 53rd minute, Abby Hobby took a pass from Hailey Davis and Hobby retook the lead.  Quirk would stop the next three shots she faced in impressive fashion, but Jillian Barnard doubled the lead in the 72nd minute.

The WildCats made an attempt to come back late in the second period, but it would be to no avail.

Quirk finished the game with 14 saves.  It was the second time this season she has finished with double-digit saves and the second time this year she posted a save percentage over .800.  Abbe Guarino also had an assist for the Maroons (8-5-3 overall, 6-2 ODAC).

Randolph (4-9-1, 4-5) will play its final ODAC game of the regular season on Tuesday.  The WildCats travel to Eastern Mennonite University (6-8-1, 2-5) for a key match.  It will provide great importance for ODAC standings with the tournament beginning next week.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
