Doyle at the Double in Win over Vixens

LYNCHBURG, VA – Delaney Doyle scored two first-half goals, helping the Randolph College women's soccer team defeat Sweet Briar College 4-0 on Tuesday night.  It was the second-consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win for the WildCats.

Just as on Saturday, the 'Cats came out and dominated the entire game.  The team sent several shots near the goal over the first ten minutes, but all were just awry of the frame.  Then just before the end of the 14th minute, Doyle received a pass on the far side of the field.  She sent a through ball to Megan Kruse, who made a well-timed run.  Kruse saw Doyle streaking into the box, and sent it through the defense, where Doyle tucked it away for the 1-0 lead.

The pressure continued, as Maggie Croft forced Caroline Thomas into a save shortly after.  Then in the 25th minute, Croft dribbled to the top of the box and let one rip.  It hit the woodwork and ricocheted right back to a cutting Doyle.  She pounced on it to claim her first brace of the year.

Over the final 20 minutes of the half, Randolph recorded seven shots, but had to settle for 2-0 advantage.

The WildCats came out of the intermission looking to add to their total.  The team pushed and had several shots go just wide or were blocked by the opposing defenders.  The team had a great opportunity in the 74th minute.  The ball got into the middle of the box, and Alissa Gembach fired a shot but it was blocked.  Patricia Garrett corralled the rebound and let one rip but it just missed.

However, the lead was increased soon after.  Following a turnover on a goal kick, Sarah Sivick found herself with the ball outside the box after a pass from Meredith Alwine.  She fired in a cross and it deflected off a Vixen and into the back of the net.  Despite the lead, the WildCats were not done.

Doyle almost had a hat trick in the 82nd minute.  She came on the ball in the box and sent a shot at Thomas.  Thomas made the initial stop, but it came right back.  Doyle ripped it but it missed the goal by inches.  But there would be a final tally.  Hunter Robinson sent in a cross from the left side in the 84th minute, where Alaina Gembach chested it to herself, and fired it into the back of the mesh to seal the win.

The 'Cats commanded the entire match, outshooting SBC 31-2 (11-2 on goal).  The WildCats also held Sweet Briar without a corner in the game.  Stephanie Quirk stopped both attempts she faced for the shutout.  Her counterpart, Thomas, made nine saves for the Vixens (1-11 overall, 0-5 ODAC).

Randolph (2-7-1, 2-3) will head on the road on Friday for another crucial ODAC clash.  The WildCats take on Emory & Henry College (3-9, 0-4) in a 7 p.m. tilt.  Both teams will be battling for spots in the ODAC tournament, which starts in less than three weeks.
