WildCats Drop Conference Opener at W&L
LEXINGTON, VA – Stephanie Quirk made 13 saves for the Randolph College women's soccer team, but the WildCats fell in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener to Washington and Lee University, 9-0 on Friday.
The Generals came out aggressively, registering several shots in the first few minutes, but could not get by the 'Cat defense during that time. Two of the opportunities were blocked by WildCat defenders, and on one of the shots, Quirk made her first stop of the game. Chandler Wickers then broke through in the 10th minute to give the Generals a 1-0 lead. Wickers added another tally and Rebecca Morris scored in the 25th minute to put the score at 3-0.
After that tally, Quirk was tested several times, saving three in a row. The Randolph backline continued to be tough on W&L as the defenders blocked three separate shots as well. However, the Generals added one more in the 38th minute. Quirk made two more saves before the intermission as Washington and Lee lead 4-0 at the half.
In the second stanza, W&L added five more to its total, but Quirk continued to be a brick wall on the goaline. She kept Washington and Lee out of the net on seven occasions in the second half. Quirk's 13 saves gives her a total of 56 in five games, which is the top mark in the ODAC.
Wickers and Morris both finished with two goals for the Generals (4-1 overall, 1-0 ODAC).
Following its longest road trip of the season, Randolph (1-5-1, 0-1) returns home next week for its longest homestand. The WildCats kick off four-straight games at home with a Tuesday matchup against #1 Lynchburg College. The crosstown-rivalry game begins at 7 p.m.
