Women's Soccer Drops Season Finale Against Sweet Briar

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- A defensive start to the game turned into a back-and-forth battle, with Sweet Briar getting the best of a 1-0 scoreline in women's soccer's finale.

Randolph had an 8-4 edge in shots at halftime, with a 3-2 shots on goal lead, but neither team really looked like scoring in a frame featuring plenty of long attempts and defensive-minded play.

The game opened up in the second, with both teams looking to finish off their season with wins.

Just past the hour mark, Sweet Briar broke through after a deep feed from the midfield beat the defense, and Kayla Kishbaugh slid the ball past a diving Quinn-Lynn Bates, who made five saves on the day.

Down by one, Randolph attacked more, with plenty of dangerous crosses, but could not get on the board.

The team's best chance came when sophomore Alissa Gembach ripped a high shot from 22 yards out.

Goalkeeper Kat Day leaped to get her fingertips on the ball, just keeping the equalizer out of her cage, preserving the 1-0 lead.

With that, Sweet Briar held on to earn the victory in the season finale.

Randolph's lone senior, Brittany Hammons, graduates as the program's fourth-highest goal and point scorer, while sitting ninth in career assists.
