FERRUM, Va. -- For the fifth straight year, Ferrum and Randolph engaged in a one-goal game to open their seasons. This time, Ferrum came out on top, 2-1.

Despite a total of nine shots in the first half, the two keepers were up to the challenge, making three saves each, to take the game to intermission level.

Just over 12 minutes into the second, Morgan Funck tallied for Ferrum (1-0), putting the Panthers up.

First-year midfielder Maggie Croft (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) was quick to respond, taking a wonderful setup from Brittany Hammons (Newport News, Va./Grafton) and Marielle Rando (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) to bring the WildCats (0-1) level.

The goal wiped away the WildCat deficit after just 31 seconds.

With the game looking like it was headed for overtime, Meghin Martin broke through for the game-winner for the hosts, taking a pass from Funck and hitting net on a low shot.

In 2011 and 2012, Randolph opened its season with one-goal wins against Ferrum. Last season the WildCats won an overtime thriller, 3-2.
