First Half Flurry Lifts WildCat Women Past Sweet Briar 4-0

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's soccer team completed its four game homestand with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory against Sweet Briar College on Tuesday night by a score of 4-0. With the win, the WildCats earned their first conference victory of the season and are off to a strong start with an overall record of 5-2-0.

After a slow first few minutes, the WildCat attack rattled off four goals in less than nine minutes to take commanding control of the match. After a great run down the right side of the field, first-year Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) was tackled hard in the box and earned a penalty kick for the WildCats. Coach Porterfield elected to have senior midfielder Brianne Roth (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) take the kick and she capitalized. Roth would later knock in a shot from the eighteen-yard line to collect her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Junior midfielder Marielle Rando (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) placed a beautiful corner kick right on the head of senior Samantha Wittie (Canyon Lake, TX/Smithson Valley), who was able to slide her second goal of the season past the Sweet Briar goalkeeper. Sophomore Brittany Hammons (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) netted Randolph's last tally, shaking off a foul to blast a shot to the near post to finish the game's scoring.

The WildCat backline also did a stellar job slowing down the attack of Sweet Briar. The WildCat defense allowed just three shots on goal all night. Senior Ashley Stevens (Leicester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) played her second consecutive game in net and earned her first shutout of her career.

The WildCats will continue their ODAC play on Saturday, September 22 as they travel across town to play rival Lynchburg College. Game time is set to start at 4:00 p.m.
