Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's soccer team dropped its opening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup to Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday by a score of 5-2.
Despite conceding two early goals, the WildCats dominated possession in the first half and did a great job of counter-attacking the Yellow Jackets. First-year Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) had several opportunities to put one in the back of the net but was unable to capitalize. The WildCats would finish the half down 3-0.
The WildCats aggression continued into the second half and they were rewarded with a penalty kick after a Yellow Jacket defender took sophomore Brittany Hammons (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) down in the penalty area. Coach Porterfield elected to have the WildCats leading scorer this season, senior Brianne Roth (Yorktown, VA/Grafton), take the kick and she was able to capitalize for her fourth score of the season.
The back line for the WildCats was sound in the second half and was able to slow down the attack for the Yellow Jackets. Senior Ashley Stevens (Leicester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) had several excellent slide tackles that prevented the Yellow Jackets from getting wide-open looks at the net.
Late in the second half, sophomore Anna Messier (Bedford, VA/Liberty) put a brilliant goal in the back of the net from 30 yards away. The Randolph-Macon keeper was caught off guard as Messier placed a perfect shot right over her outstretched hand.
With the loss, the WildCats record falls to 4-1-0 (0-1-0 ODAC). The WildCats will be back in action on Saturday, September 15, 2012 as they take on the Generals of Washington and Lee at WildCat Stadium on the campus of Randolph College. Game time starts at 1 p.m.
