WildCat Women's Soccer Ends Memorable Season with 5-0 Loss at Bridgewater

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, VA – The Randolph College women's soccer team finished its 2012 season Tuesday afternoon with a loss at Bridgewater College 5-0, but accomplished so much this year earning the program's second winning season in school history while finishing with the second-most wins ever with nine.

Tuesday's match with Bridgewater College could have meant a chance to make the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament, with Randolph (9-8/4-8 ODAC) needing at least a point to give itself a shot to earn the eighth and final spot in the tournament. The Eagles (11-6-1/8-3-1 ODAC) came out firing though, taking advantage of a WildCat team missing three starters.

Randolph played the game with only one substitute as second leading goal scorer Brianne Roth (Yorktown, VA/Grafton), as well as key contributors Kelsey Cline (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) and Anna Messier (Bedford, VA/Liberty), missed the contest because of class conflicts or sickness. The shorthanded WildCats surrendered an early goal, as Marina Del Pizzo potted a pass from Elizabeth Stump for the 1-0 lead just 3:45 into the game.

The host Eagles doubled their lead in the 33rd minute, as Paxton Sauerwald took a shot from the top of the 18 that deflected off the left post and into the net for the goal. The WildCats had their best opportunity to score in the 44th minute, as sophomore Brittany Hammons (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) broke in looking for her 10th goal of the year but her attempt was stopped by BC's Krista Kelly.

BC tacked on another score at the 52:29 point of the contest, as Jessica Sites took a pass from Abby Dehoff and beat Randolph keeper Hunter Gibson (Newport News, VA/Denbigh Baptist) to her left. Randolph almost cut the lead to 3-1 in the 78th minute, as Ally Ramos (Manassas, VA/C.D. Hylton) had the keeper beat by a BC defender saved the ball off the line to keep Randolph off the board. BC added another in the 88th minute, as Rachel Woods scored to make the game 4-0.

Randolph junior Marielle Rando (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) had a good chance late, but Stephanie Bebko was there for the Eagles. BC chalked up the final goal of the contest with 22 seconds left, as Jacey Kelley scored for Bridgewater.

BC outshot the WildCats on the afternoon 32-3, with Gibson making eight saves in net for the WildCats. Randolph's final goal tally for the season of 42 was the sixth-most in school history, while the 6.44 points per contest is the fourth-most for a WildCat team.

The WildCats say goodbye to seven seniors in Roth, Cline, Samantha Wittie (Canyon Lake, TX/Smithson Valley), Amanda Cooper (Canyon Lake, TX/Smithson Valley), Caitlin Sheehan (Herndon, VA/Herndon), Ashley Stevens (Leicester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) and Julianna Joyce (Mayaguez, PR/Southwestern). Randolph is set to return 13 players in 2013, including seven starters.
