Hammons, Roth Lead Randolph Women's Soccer to Senior Day Victory Over Hollins

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – Senior Brianne Roth (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) and sophomore Brittany Hammons (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) each scored a pair of goals Saturday as the Randolph College women's soccer team clinched a winning season with a 4-2 Senior Day victory over Hollins University in league action.

The WildCats (9-7/4-7 ODAC) assured themselves of their first winning season since 2002, and also chalked up their ninth win, the second-most wins ever in program history. Randolph earned its second victory in as many tries at home against HU (4-12/2-9 ODAC).

Randolph opened the scoring at the 8:50 point of the contest, as Hammons picked up her eighth goal of the season off of a free kick. Senior Samantha Wittie (Canyon Lake, TX/Smithson Valley) played the free kick perfectly over the HU defense to Hammons, who broke away and beat the keeper to her right for the goal.

Hollins answered right back in the 23rd minute thanks to an unassisted tally from Becca Logan. Roth put the WildCats back on top 14 minutes later, as she ran onto a cross from first-year defender Erin Carter (Vienna, VA/James Madison) to make the score 2-1. After intermission a defensive breakdown by the WildCats led to an empty net goal for Hollins, as Logan notched her second of the afternoon to knot the score at two.

The host WildCats showed their mettle, re-taking the lead for good on an unassisted goal from Hammons. Hammons shook her defender and chipped the keeper to make the game 3-2. Just under three minutes later, Roth put the contest away with a high-arching shot that snuck under the crossbar for her eighth goal of the season.

Randolph finished with a slight advantage in the shot category (18-16), while each team earned four corner kicks in the game. WildCat keeper Hunter Gibson (Newport News, VA/Denbigh Baptist) made 10 saves on the afternoon to up his season mark to 7-4. Brandi Chesne chalked up six saves for Hollins.

The WildCats will finish their 2012 regular season against Bridgewater College this Tuesday evening at 4 p.m. in Bridgewater, VA.
