Emory & Henry's Quick Start Dooms Randolph Women's Soccer in 5-1 Loss Saturday

Box Score

EMORY, VA – The hosting Wasps of Emory & Henry College scored twice in the first 5:44 of the game and netted two more first-half goals in earning a 5-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the Randolph College women's soccer team Saturday afternoon.

In a game with a ton of postseason implications, Emory & Henry (4-10/3-7 ODAC) was able to finish their chances early on. Only 63 seconds into the game, the Wasps got on the board thanks to a Sarah Gorenflo goal. Minutes later, Erica Merriman notched an unassisted tally to double the E&H lead to two, scoring off a rebound of a blocked shot.

Emory & Henry added another pair of goals towards the end of the half to make the score 4-0. Randolph (8-6/3-6 ODAC) got on the board with just over two minutes left in the opening period, as Brittany Hammons (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) took advantage of a keeper that was out of position, and scored from distance to pull Randolph to within one.

The story of the game though was the Emory & Henry defense and its utilization of the offside trap. Randolph was unable to keep its runners onsides, and as a result it was whistled for 14 offside violations on the afternoon. E&H added another goal in the second half to give itself the final four-goal edge.

Randolph was led in the shot department by the three of sophomore Melisa Rodriguez (Culpeper, VA/Eastern View), while Ally Ramos (Manassas, VA/C.D. Hylton) fired a pair of attempts. Sophomore Hunter Gibson (Newport News, VA/Denbigh Baptist) made four saves for the WildCats. Emory & Henry won the shot battle 19-8.

Randolph will return to the field Tuesday afternoon at 6 p.m. against No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan College in WildCat Stadium.
