Softball Splits with EMU, Bounce Back with Game Two, 3-0

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph College Softball team hosted Eastern Mennonite for a conference doubleheader game on Sunday. The WildCats fell, 5-11, in Game One; however, the WildCats picked up a 3-0 shutout win over Eastern Mennonite for Game Two.

Game One

The Royals took a 5-0 lead after plating runs in the first and third innings. In the fourth, Michaela Williams hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Laura Herzig. EMU was held scoreless in the fifth, and Chesney Shook capitalized with an RBI single to bring in Addy Compton, bringing the score to 5-2.

Then, EMU tacked on four runs, one in the sixth and three in the seventh, to extend their lead. Randolph attempted a comeback in the seventh when Rylee Humble walked in a run to make the score 11-3, and then Rachel Arce had a two RBI single to plate Herzig and Haili Gonzalez, but it was not enough as the Royals took the 11-5 victory.

Arce led with two RBIs, and Humble, Williams, and Shook each had an RBI apiece.

Austyn Moran got the start in the circle and had four strikeouts. Delaney Sipes came in as relief and pitched one inning.

Game Two

Humble led the way, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just six hits and one walk. The WildCats backed her early, as Gonzalez scored in the first on an RBI single from Arce.

Randolph added two more runs in the fifth, with Arce delivering again on a two-RBI single to score Gonzalez and Herzig. Arce finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The team is back home on Wednesday, April 15, to face Roanoke at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
