Softball Splits Doubleheader with Mary Baldwin

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Mary Baldwin in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. The WildCats won their first game of the season as they defeated the Fighting Squirrels 8-1 in the first game and fell 6-3 in Game 2.

The WildCats led 3-0 after the first inning. Laura Herzig (Harrisburg, N.C./Hickory Ridge) walked to lead off and then advanced and scored on three straight wild pitches. Haili Gonzalez (Bedford, Va./Liberty), Rylee Humble (Haw River, N.C.), and Addy Compton (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) all walked. Kaitlyn Wills (Faber, Va./Monticello) singled to score Gonzalez and an Edie Jennings (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) groundout scored Humble.

A Gonzalez sac fly in the second inning plated another run. Mary Baldwin scored once in the top of the third. The WildCats broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning to lead 8-1.  

Humble got the win in the circle as she pitched six innings. She allowed one run on four hits, walked six, and struck out two batters. Delaney Sipes (Arrington, Va./Amherst County) came in for one inning and allowed just one walk.

Herzig was 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. Gonzalez went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Wills finished 2-for-4 with a RBI. Kyndall Shapiro (Goochland, Va./Goochland) was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Compton went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

In the second game, Mary Baldwin led 2-0 after the second inning. Randolph got a run in the third as Herzig scored on a wild pitch and the went ahead with two more runs coming across home plate.

The Fighting Squirrels tied the game at 3-3 all with one out in the fourth and then went ahead 5-3 with two more runs. They would score their last run in the seventh inning.

Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River HS) pitched 3.1 innings. She allowed two earned runs on four hits and walked two. Sipes came in for 3.2 innings and gave up two unearned runs on five hits with one walk.

Calla Christian (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double. Humble was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.  

Randolph travels to Raleigh, N.C. to participate in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic. The WildCats will face #25 Salisbury at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday followed by North Carolina Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m.
