LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's volleyball team hosted Eastern Mennonite in its regular season home finale on Saturday evening. The WildCats defeated the Royals in a hard-fought three sets 29-27, 25-14, 29-27.
With the win, the WildCats improve to 17-10 overall and 8-6 in ODAC play.
In the first set, the two teams started off exchanging a pair of points. EMU would pull ahead 6-4 before Randolph came back to take a 7-6 lead. After the Royals tied up the frame at 7-7 and 8-8, the 'Cats went ahead as they took a 16-12 lead. They would hold a lead until the Royals tied at 21-21. Randolph tallied three straight points to move to 24-21 but EMU was able to rally to go ahead 25-24. Kills by Derek Smith (Alexandria, Va./Homeschool) and Samuel Brown (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial HS) gave the WildCats a 26-25 lead but EMU responded with kills from Derek Diaz and Ezekiel Awkward to grab the lead back at 27-26. In the end, the WildCats got back-to-back kills from Halvard Hauge (Rolsvoy, Norway/Frederick II VGS) and a final kill by Brown to win the set 29-27.
The second set started tied at 1-1. Randolph went on a 10-1 run to go up 11-2. The Royals could not chip away at their deficit as the WildCats easily won the set 25-14.
The Royals got out in front 9-4 in the third set. They would continue to hold a lead on the WildCats as they looked to get back into the match. EMU was at set point at 24-20 when the 'Cats tied it up at 24-24. Both teams exchanged points with Randolph eventually going ahead 27-26. The Royals tied at 27-27 but a kill by Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Institute) followed by one from Ahmed Diallo (Aurora, Colo./Overland HS) completed the comeback for the WildCats as they claimed the frame 29-27 to win the match.
Diallo had a double-double effort with a team-high 16 kills and 13 digs to go along with four block assists. Zachary Septoff (Cumberland, Md.) added nine kills and four block assists. Noel Schmid (Wiesau, Germany/Stiftland-Gymnasium) chipped in nine kills, five digs, and three service aces. Maher led in assists with 35. Hauge finished with five solo blocks and four kills.
Randolph travels to Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday. Game time from Virginia Beach will be at 6:00 p.m.
