VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- The Randolph men's volleyball team played its penultimate regular season match on Wednesday as the WildCats faced Virginia Wesleyan. For the second time this season, the teams played to a fifth set and the WildCats rallied to win after trailing 2-0 with a reverse sweep over the Marlins 3-2 (20-25, 15-25, 25-14, 25-17, 17-15).
Randolph improves its overall record to 18-10 overall and 9-6 in ODAC play.
The two teams traded off points to start the first set. Virginia Wesleyan led at one instance 7-5 before the WildCats scored three straight points to go ahead 8-7. The Marlins pulled away with a 10-3 run to lead 17-11. The 'Cats closed late to within four points but VWU held its lead on its way to a 25-20 win.
Randolph got out to a 6-4 lead in the second set but the Marlins came back to overtake the WildCats and led 12-8. Virginia Wesleyan continued to add to its advantage as it led for the remainder of the frame in winning 25-15.
The Marlins started the third set with a 2-0 lead until the WildCats went on a 9-2 run to go up 9-4. Randolph added to its lead as it was ahead 19-9 on its way to a 25-14 win.
The 'Cats started off the fourth frame strong as it led 7-3 and then 14-6. The Marlins closed with within five points at 22-17 but Randolph pulled out the win as it scored the last three points to take the frame 25-17.
The fifth set saw the WildCats lead 7-4 but the Marlins come back to tie at 7-7. The WildCats edged ahead 11-9 until a 4-0 Marlin run put the home team ahead 13-11. Kills by
Ahmed Diallo (Aurora, Colo./Overland HS) and
Shamel Smith (Tamarac, Fla.) tied the set at 13-13. After VWU moved to set point at 14-13, another kill by Smith followed by a Marlin attack error gave Randolph a 15-14 lead. Virginia Wesleyan tied at 15-15 bit a kill by Smith and an attack error on VWU gave the WildCats the winning point to clinch the match.
Smith finished with a team-high 13 kills.
Derek Smith (Alexandria, Va./Homeschool) added 12 kills and eight digs.
Ian Arce (Sneads Ferry, N.C./Dixon HS) totaled 34 assists with
Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Institute) adding 10.
Samuel Looney (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley HS) led the team in digs with 11.
Zachary Septoff (Cumberland, Md.) had four block assists and one solo block.
The WildCats conclude regular season play on Saturday at Bridgewater. Match time is at 4:00 p.m.
