DANVILLE, Va.- The Randolph men's volleyball team took on Averett in an ODAC match on Wednesday evening at the E. Stuart James Grant Center. The WildCats defeated the Cougars 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-23).
Randolph improves to 16-10 overall and 7-6 in ODAC play.
Averett scored the first point of the first set but Randolph came back to overtake the Cougars and lead 6-2. The WildCats eventually pushed their lead out to 10-4. Holding a 12-8 advantage, the 'Cats went on a 12-5 run to win the frame 25-13.
Randolph notched the first four points of the second set to take a 4-0 lead. The WildCats had leads of 10-3 and 14-4. Averett pulled to within eight points at 18-10 but the 'Cats ended the set on a 7-0 run to win 25-10.
The Cougars got out to a 3-1 lead in the third set before the WildCats came back to take a 4-3 lead. AU went ahead 10-6 and eventually went on top of the 'Cats 20-14. Randolph worked its way back in and its 11-3 run in the end overwhelmed the Cougars as the WildCats won 25-23 to claim the match.
Derek Smith (Alexandria, Va./Homeschool) led the team with 10 kills and tied for the lead in digs with eight. Ahmed Diallo (Aurora, Colo./Overland HS) added nine kills and six digs. Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Institute) led in assists with 29. Samuel Looney (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley HS) finished with eight digs.
Randolph returns to Giles Gymnasium on Saturday to host Eastern Mennonite in its regular season home finale. The match begins at 7:00 p.m.
