LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's lacrosse team hosted Hiram College on Tuesday afternoon at WildCat Stadium. The two teams had a back-and-forth battle in the second half that saw the visiting Terriers defeat the WildCats by the score of 8-7.
Hiram led 3-0 with 3:20 left to play in the opening quarter. A delay of game penalty on the Terriers' Tyler Wolke gave the WildCats an extra-man opportunity that Britton Malcolm (Churchville, Va./Buffalo Gap) took advantage of as he found the back of the net to make it 3-1.
Noah Callahan's (Bristow, Va./Brentsville District) goal just over two minutes into the second quarter made it 3-2. Hiram eventually led by two goals, 5-3, with 5:02 showing on the game clock. Another penalty on the Terriers granted the 'Cats a man-up situation and Cooper Callan (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) scored to make it 5-4. Just 20 seconds after the faceoff, Callan scored again off an assist by his brother Chase to knot the score at 5-5. Hiram broke the tie at 2:35 and the two teams went into halftime with the Terriers leading 6-5.
Cole Robbins (Chesterfield, Va.) tied the game at 6-6 at 10:30 of the third quarter. The score remained tied for nearly eight minutes of game time until Hiram pulled ahead 7-6 at 2:51.
In the fourth quarter, both defenses prevented any scoring opportunities. Randolph keeper Keegan Slider (Saluda, Va./Christchurch School) turned away five Hiram shots. It was the midpoint of the period when Jordan Nutter (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) scored off an assist by Cooper Callan to tie the game at 7-7. Hiram netted the game-winning goal with 6:46 left to play in regulation. The WildCats were held to one shot for the rest of the quarter as the Terrier defense held firm.
Shots slightly favored Hiram 33-31. Randolph won 10 faceoffs to the Terriers' nine. The WildCats were 2-for-4 on extra-man opportunities with Hiram going 1-for-3.
Cooper Callan scored twice and added two assists. Chase Callan had a goal and two assists. Robbins, Nutter, Malcolm, and Callahan all scored once. Callahan was 8-of-12 on faceoffs.
Slider led with four groundballs. He stopped 14 shots in the net.
Randolph is home again on Saturday as it welcomes Pitt-Bradford to WildCat Stadium. Game time will be at 1:00 p.m.
