LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team played its first game of the 2026 season as the WildCats hosted Methodist on Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs won both games of the doubleheader by scores of 5-2 and 11-3.
In the first game, Methodist scored once in the first inning and added a pair of runs in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Two more runs came across in the fourth inning. Randolph finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Laura Herzig (Harrisburg, N.C./Hickory Ridge) hit a two-out double down the left field line. Haili Gonzalez (Bedford, Va./Liberty) singled to left to score Herzig. Rylee Humble's (Haw River, N.C.) RBI single scored Gonzales.
Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River HS) started in the circle for the WildCats. She pitched five innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits. She walked five and struck out three. Delaney Sipes (Arrington, Va./Amherst County) came in for two innings and allowed just one hit and one walk.
Herzig was 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot and scored one run. Gonzalez and Humble were both 1-for-3.
In the second game, Methodist scored once in the first inning to lead 1-0. In the Randolph half of the inning, Herzig led off with a bunt single and a Gonzales groundout moved her to second base. After Humble struck out, Addy Compton (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) doubled to left field to score Herzig. Kyndall Shapiro (Goochland, Va./Goochland) singled to right to score Compton and the WildCats led 2-1.
The Monarchs plated three runs in the second inning to go ahead 4-2. The WildCats got a run back on a Gonzalez RBI single to make it 4-3. The score remained that way until the fifth when the Monarchs scored once and then added another run in the sixth inning and five in the seventh inning. Randolph looked to get its way back in the bottom of the sixth as the WildCats had bases loaded with two outs but Compton grounded out to end the inning.
Humble pitched 6.2 innings in the circle. She allowed five earned runs on 12 hits, walked six, and struck out two. Sipes pitched 1/3 inning.
Herzig finished 3-for-3 with a run scored. Shapiro went 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Kaitlyn Wills batted 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Randolph is home again on Wednesday as it hosts Mary Baldwin. First game of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
