Big Second Half Lifts Men’s Lacrosse to 15-8 Home Opening Win over Brevard

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's lacrosse team hosted Brevard in its home opener on Saturday afternoon at WildCat Stadium. The WildCats broke open a close game late in third quarter with an eight-goal outburst as they defeated the Tornadoes 15-8.

The game was scoreless in the first quarter until Randolph broke through at 6:33 as Britton Malcolm (Churchville, Va./Buffalo Gap) put the WildCats ahead. After Brevard tied it at 1-all at 3:18, Cooper Callan (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) scored off an assist from his brother Chase Callan (Fredericksburg, Va.) to put the 'Cats back on top. Brevard scored one more time with 1:34 remaining in the period to even the score at 2-2.

Cooper Callan scored again at the 12:44 mark of the second quarter to give Randolph a 3-2 advantage. The Tornadoes netted two straight scores to pull ahead 4-3 with 8:41 remaining in the quarter. Malcolm scored his second of the day off an assist by Chase Callan at the 7:08 mark to tie the game at 4-4. Brevard grabbed the lead back again at 6:22 but the WildCats ended the quarter scoring three straight times to lead 7-5 at the break.

In the third quarter, the Tornadoes closed to within one goal of tying at 7-6 but the WildCats pushed ahead with three straight goals to go on top 10-6 heading into the final quarter of play. It was all Randolph in the fourth quarter as the 'Cats scored five more times to go up 15-6 with 8:09 remaining on the clock. Brevard scored once with 4:51 left and a second time with 35 seconds remaining but it was not enough as Randolph came away with the win.

Malcolm led the WildCats with a career-high four goals. He also picked up three groundballs and caused three turnovers. Cooper Callan also had four goals on the day along with an assist. Chase Callan tallied three goals and three assists for a six-point day. He picked up two groundballs and caused three turnovers. Jordan Nutter (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) scored once as did Josh Parker (Fort Moore, Ga./North Stafford HS). Parker had four groundball pickups and was 8-of-10 on faceoffs. Gavin Maple (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) scored once. Jacob Bucceri (Spotsylvania, Va./Caroline HS) had a goal and assist. Cole Robbins (Chesterfield, Va.) dished out three assists, had three groundballs, and caused three turnovers. Noah Callahan (Bristow, Va./Brentsville District HS) had two assists.

Parker Eastman (Ruther Glen, Va./Riverbend) led the team with nine groundballs and was 10-of-16 on faceoffs. Keegan Slider (Saluda, Va./Christchurch School) stopped four shots in goal to pick up the win. Jayden Rosado (Lynchburg, Va./St. Cloud High (Fla.) came in for the final quarter and had one save.

Randolph is home again on March 4 when it hosts William Peace. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
