Men’s Tennis Shuts Out Roanoke 7-0

SALEM, VA.- The Randolph men's tennis team returned to the court for this first time since November as the WildCats started their spring schedule on Wednesday afternoon against Roanoke. The 'Cats defeated the Maroons 7-0.

Randolph improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in ODAC play.

The WildCats won two of three doubles matches to lead 1-0. First doubles was a close decision as Jacob Martin (Wadebridge Cornwall, Great Britain/Callywith College) and Andreas Mulner (Brasnov, Romania) were edged out Federico Maccari and Nolad Macedo 7-6.

"Tough result for Jacob and Andreas but it was a high-level match at first doubles," said head coach Sam Martinez. "No breaks of serve for any of the four players speaks to that. They'll learn from it once we watch the film back and improve. Really gritty win by Vincenzo and Carlos at second doubles after being down 4-1 to start. Needed them badly. Great to see Aksel and Jason pick up where they left off after the fall season at third doubles."

Martin won his first singles match against Maccari 6-1, 6-2. Vincenzo Marchese was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at third singles over Luiz Henriquez. Aksel Tinnes-Rimehaug (Oslo, Norway) defeated Macedo 6-3, 6-0 at fourth singles. Jacob Duval (Kingston, Jamaica) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at fifth singles and Carlos Haupt (Weston, Fla./FLVS) won 6-2, 6-0 over Jackson Wagner at sixth singles. Mulner was the last match on the court and he needed three sets to defeat Ramirez 4-6, 6-2 1-0.

"Really good first result of the season in ODAC play for the guys against a tough and well coached Roanoke team," said head coach Sam Martinez. "Getting the doubles point to start gave us the momentum we needed because the first match of the spring will always have some jitters[DH1]  and things to work out. The singles was very convincing against a team I expected to be really tight against. Looking forward to Bridgewater at home on Saturday."

Randolph hosts the Eagles on Saturday. The match begins at 1:00 p.m.
