Softball Shows Fight Late but Drops Doubleheader at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph Softball team made the quick trip over to the University of Lynchburg. The WildCats dropped both games to the Hornets, falling 1-9 in five innings in game one and 5-8 in game two at Moon Field.

The WildCats (5-23, 4-8) got on the board in the third inning when Chesney Shook reached base with a walk and later scored on a fielding error that brought Riley Shupe to home plate. The 'Cats were down one run in the third inning, but the Hornets' offense pushed forward in the third and fifth innings to win game one.

Shook finished the day going 1-for-1 with a run and a walk. Laura Herzig, Lexi Hawkins, Addy Compton, and Shupe each collected one hit apiece for Randolph.

Rylee Humble got the start in the circle for the 'Cats, going 4.0 innings and allowing eight runs on eight hits. Hailey Metzger came in as relief in the fifth only giving up four hits and one unearned run while striking two out.

A late-inning surge wasn't enough for the 'Cats in game two. Randolph was in an early deficit after the Hornets (16-10, 6-5) built a 6-0 lead through five innings. The WildCats showed resilience late, plating two runs in the sixth inning, after Edie Jennings and Hawkins were hit-by-pitch that led to Kaitlyn Wills and Herzig scoring to get on the board.

Lynchburg responded in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. However, Humble singled to left field allowed Rachel Arce to score and Amanda Lawhorn's two-RBI single into center field brought in Herzig and Bowen to cut the deficit to three in the top of the seventh, but the Hornets shut the door to end the rally.

Austyn Moran started in the circle, allowing five runs on six hits in four innings. Aubree Bass came in and pitched one inning allowing one run and one hit and Delaney Sipes also came in and pitched one inning, allowing two runs on four hits.

Randolph matched Lynchburg with 11 hits. Moran helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 day, while Bowen added two hits and a stolen base. Herzig, Hawkins, Addie Bowen, and Compton also swiped a base.

The 'Cats return home for senior day on Saturday against Bridgewater College starting at 2 p.m.
