LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph College softball team was edged out by Ferrum College in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, falling 4-0 and falling 6-0 in game two.
Randolph (5-21) limited the Panthers (10-14) to just two hits on the day, but a three-run fifth inning proved to be the difference as Ferrum capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting to seal the win.
Paige Scruggs got the start for the WildCats and held Ferrum to one run in 1.1 innings before handing the ball off to
Aubree Bass, who tossed 3.2 innings of one-hit relief without allowing an earned run.
Hailey Metzger closed out the game with two perfect innings, striking out one.
Offensively, Randolph managed three hits, with
Riley Shupe,
Lacey Lucado, and
Desiree Scott each recording a base knock.
In game two, Randolph's offense showed promise with contributions throughout the lineup. Shupe led the team with a 2-for-4 performance, while
Laura Herzig,
Bethany Martz, Lucado,
Sammie Carroll,
Austyn Moran, and
Makenzee Kenney each collected a hit. Moran also doubled in the third inning for the WildCats' lone extra-base hit of the contest.
Moran started in the circle for Randolph, allowing four earned runs over 3.2 innings of work. Metzger and
Rylee Humble came on in relief, with Humble tossing two scoreless frames and striking out one.
The 'Cats travel up the road to the University of Lynchburg on Tuesday for an ODAC doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
