Men’s Tennis Upsets Hampden-Sydney in ODAC Quarterfinals

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.- The sixth seeded Randolph men's tennis team traveled to third seeded Hampden-Sydney for the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Wednesday. Randolph led 1-0 after doubles and went on to claim three matches in singles play as the WildCats upset the Tigers 4-2.

For Randolph, it is the program's first ever win in the ODAC Tournament. The four points won by the WildCats are also the first ever scored in the tournament in the history of the program.

The WildCats won matches at first and third doubles. Jacob Martin and Andreas Mulner edged out the pair of Barrett Foster and Thomas Davis 7-6 at first doubles. Jason Duval and Ondra Pelda defeated Dillon McReynolds and Jonathan Fogle 6-4 at third doubles.

Martin secured Randolph's second point of the match with his 7-5, 6-1 victory over Davis at first singles. Vincenzo Marchese won his third singles match 6-2, 6-2 against Emerson Rice. The matched was clinched by Mulner at first singles. Foster won the first set 6-1 while Mulner recovered to win the second set 6-4 and then the third set 6-3 to secure the victory for the 'Cats.

"Pretty lost for words at how proud I am of the guys," said head coach Sam Martinez. "We knew it was going to be a battle against a nationally ranked team and #3 seed. We knew they were well coached and strong in doubles and we came out and took it to them. Jacob and Andreas beating their first doubles team who were 16-2 and in receiving NCAA consideration in the rankings was incredible. Jason and Ondra winning at three doubles was seismic. We knew it we got the doubles point, we would have all the momentum. In singles, Jacob and Vincenzo got us going with decisive wins. Coming down to Andreas and Carlos at the end was special because they are two of our best fighters. For Andreas to clinch against their senior #1 Barrett after losing the first set… no words. I was all heart from the entire group."

The WildCats advance to the semifinals this Saturday when they will take on second seed Averett. The match will be held at Washington and Lee's courts.
