Women’s Tennis Upsets Sweet Briar in ODAC Quarterfinals

SWEET BRIAR, Va.- The sixth seeded Randolph women's tennis team faced third seeded Sweet Briar in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. The WildCats led 1-0 after doubles play and went on to win three singles matches to clinch as Randolph defeated the Vixens 4-2.

The victory snaps a five-match winless steak to the Vixens and is the first against them since 2019. It is also Randolph's first win in the ODAC Tournament since 2019.

Randolph won doubles matches at first and third doubles to pick up a point. Lena Kersten (Bonn, Germany/Otto Kuhne Schule) and Lize van Veen (Harderwijk, The Netherlands RSG Slingerbos) defeated Alex Guilarte and Isadora Lima 6-4 at first doubles. Gianna Cabrera (Portsmouth, Va.) and Sabrina Dickerson (Brookneal, Va.) won 6-3 over the pair of Atty Bestwick and Maggie Minton.

In the singles portion, Kersten was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Caracciolo at first singles. Fleur Gaalman (Abcoude, Utrecht, Netherlands Haarlemmermeer Lyceum Dalton) won 6-4, 6-2 over Guilarte at second singles. The match was clinched for the 'Cats at third singles where Van Veen was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Lima.

"So, so, so proud of this team," said head coach Sam Martinez. "They have earned their way to the semifinals. It's rare to have all six players all bring their A game in a match and that's what happened today. The focus and competitiveness was the best its been all year especially for our seniors Gianna and Sabrina to clinch the doubles point!"

Randolph advances to play second seeded Averett on Saturday in the semifinals at Washington and Lee's courts. The match will start at 11:00 a.m.
