LEXINGTON, Va.- The sixth seeded Randolph women's tennis team faced off against second seeded Averett in the ODAC semifinals on Saturday at the Duchossis Tennis Center at Washington and Lee. The Cougars won the match by the score of 4-2.
Despite falling behind 1-0 in doubles play, the first doubles team of Lena Kersten (Bonn, Germany/Otto Kuhne Schule) and Lize van Veen (Harderwijk, The Netherlands RSG Slingerbos) won over the pair of Jennika Jaison and Siddhi Khandelwal 6-2. The doubles point came down to the second doubles pair featuring Fleur Gaalman (Abcoude, Utrecht, Netherlands Haarlemmermeer Lyceum Dalton) and Emma Bauer (Munich, Germany) squaring off against Brenda Poulakidas and Ravaka Ramanantoanina. The match was tied at 6-6 going to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Gaalman and Bauer fought back and forth but fell 7-5.
In singles play, Van Veen was the first one to finish as she was a 6-2, 6-4 victor over Dilara Sultanova at third singles. Kersten outlasted Ramanatoanin at first singles 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 to pick up Randolph's second point of the day. The match was clinched by Averett's Annika Kelleher over Gianna Cabrera (Portsmouth, Virginia) 6-0, 6-3 at sixth singles.
The WildCats conclude their season with an overall record of 10-9. The match was the final for seniors Cabrera and Sabrina Dickerson (Brookneal, Va.)
